Twelve Rules for Spoiling a Child

The Police Department of Houston, Texas issued the following document, entitled Twelve Rules for Spoiling a Child:

1. Begin at infancy to give the child everything he wants. In this  way he will grow up to believe that the world owes him a living.

2.    When he picks up bad words, laugh at him. This will make him  think he’s cute.

3.    Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is 21 and then let him decide for himself.

4.    Avoid the word “wrong.” The child may develop a guilt complex.

5.    Do everything for him so that he will be experienced in throwing all responsibility on other people.

6.    Let him read any printed material he can get his hands on.

7.  Quarrel frequently in the presence of your children.

8.    Give a child all the spending money he wants.

9.    Satisfy every craving for food, drink and comfort.

10.Take his side against neighbors, teachers, and policemen.

11.   When he gets into real trouble, apologize for him yourself.

12.   Prepare for a life of grief..

God has given us certain principles to help us raise a family that we ignore at our peril.

The Pastor’s Message

“The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ).  And he brought him to Jesus.’” (John 1:41,42)

40 Days of Family

Andrew was one of the first disciples to follow Jesus, and the Bible says that the first thing that Andrew did in following Jesus was that he went and found his brother and brought him to Jesus (John 1:41-42). This is significant because it says to us that as disciples of Jesus Christ, we must not only be concerned about our own well-being, but also about the well being of our families. It also says that getting our families  to Jesus should be a top priority.

In this regard, the East Washington Heights Baptist Church will soon embark upon a “40 Days of  Family” spiritual growth campaign. What is 40 Days of Family? It is a follow-up to last year’s 40 Days of Purpose Bible study and it’s a time for the East Washington Heights Baptist Church to focus on issues facing families including grief and youth unemployment. Following are some highlights of the campaign:

*  Friends and Family Sunday – Our 40 Days of Family journey will begin with a “Family and Friends” Worship Service.  The service will take place on Sunday, March 19, 2006. Please invite your family and friends to join us in church on this Sunday. Special invitations have been prepared.  Following the service, there will be a reception and a time of fellowship.

*      Special Bible Study Classes - The classes will take place from Sunday, March 26 to Sunday, April 30. Classes will include “Keeping the Honey in Your Moon” on marriage; Being Happily Single; and a course on “Productive Grieving.” There will also be special men’s and women’s classes on Wednesday nights at 6:30 PM and revamped classes for children and youth. Class sign-ups will begin on Sunday, March 19. There will be a Sunday School Round-up held on this day at 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM.

*  Credit and Workforce Development Seminars – There will be a credit seminar at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 25. The seminar will share how families can get control of their finances. There will also be a workforce development seminar at the same time. The focus of this seminar will be on giving young people (18 to 30) the necessary skills to land jobs in corporate America. Topics will include resume preparation, and how to set career advancement goals. Both sessions will be done in conjunction with the Southeast Minister’s Fellowship and Operation Hope.

*  Special Activities – On Friday, March 24 we will host a Christian Starlight Café and on Friday, April 7 we will host our children and youth night out. In addition, we will hold our annual Palm Sunday Service on the Church Lawn (April 9) and our Young Adult Sunday (April 23).

The events will again culminate with a celebration Sunday. A ministry fair is being planned for a Sunday following Easter. 40 Days of family will overlap the Lenten season and continue past Resurrection Sunday, which will be on Sunday, April 16. Please do not miss this opportunity to focus on God’s vision for you and your family and to develop the skills you need to achieve this vision.

Peace and Blessings!

Living in the Power of the Holy Spirit

The Gift of Teaching

By Charles Stanley

Did you know that you have the ability to glorify Jesus Christ in a way that no one else can duplicate?

As long as you are a believer, this is true. According to 1 Peter 4:10, “each one has received a special gift.” We have these gifts so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ working in us.

We can be all that God designed us to be and achieve all that He wants us to achieve through these gifts. God intended for us to use them together within the ministry of the church. Romans 12: 6-8 tells us about the motivational gifts that define how we think and act.

You need not have the gift of teaching to be an excellent teacher. The gift of service, for example, could motivate you to meet the need of teaching. Being gifted in the direction of teaching, however, means that you will do your best and be your best in teaching others.

Many people have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge. They have spent years and decades in research. Still, they have not found joy or peace. Knowledge and teaching have no value at all unless they change our lives for the Lord.

Through the gift of Spirit-filled teaching, we have the opportunity to be transformed and to help others be transformed. How wonderful and awesome is the truth that God has raised up godly teachers in every generation, so that you and I can receive instruction that is thorough, truthful, and God-honoring.

       Even if you don’t possess the gift of teaching, you have the tremendous gift of listening. No matter how young or old you might be, and no matter what situation you find yourself in, there is no limit to how wise and strong you can grow in Christ by making yourself available to sound teaching from His eternal Word. Supporting Scripture: Romans 12:6-8; 1 Peter 4:10; Luke 1:3;

2 Peter 2:1; 1John 4:1.
