WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?

Has anyone every told you to “Have a blessed day”? Has anyone every said “Bless you”? So many times, we hear these phrases and think how wonderful it is to have other Christians asking that God bless us and wishing us a blessed day. As teens, you do a good deed and someone says “Bless you”. Or, you get good grades in school and the minister says “Bless you”.

How about when you pray, do you ask God to bless you and others? Do you thank God for your blessings? You probably do. And, that’s as it should be. We can go to our Lord in prayer and ask that He bless us and others. Here’s something to think about: Do you ever pray that Jesus might be blessed as well?

The scripture sited above says that there is one who is the only one who is truly blessed; the King of kings and Lord of lords. There are many scriptures that say that Jesus is blessed. We sing a song “Bless The Lord Oh My Soul and all that is within me Bless His Holy Name.”

Should our love for Jesus make us want to say “Bless you Jesus”? Surely you can think of reasons to pray “Bless You Lord”. Could this be one of the highest forms of thanks to say to our Lord and Savior?

Try it next time you pray. Just say “Bless you Lord”.

TEEN TALK

This story is about a boy named Josh. Josh goes to church every Sunday with his parents. Josh has accepted Christ and acknowledges that he is a Christian. But, Josh has a problem, he thinks cussing, as he likes to call it, is okay. Josh thinks that cursing doesn’t affect his Christianity. For a Christian, Josh has an awful mouth.

One morning as Josh was getting ready for work, he was trying to squeeze toothpaste out of the tube and he squeezed the tube too hard and the paste squirted in his eye. This made him curse badly. His mother heard him and called out for him to watch his mouth. Even though he has this problem, Josh is a well-behaved young man. He does very well in school. He is involved in several church activities. He tries hard to always respect his parents and other adults. He just can’t seem to watch his mouth.

One day while doing his work in school, a new student came to join his class. The teacher introduced the new student as Thomas. The teacher asked Josh to work with Thomas for the first few days until Thomas learned his way around.

When the bell rang, Josh and Thomas went to the cafeteria for lunch. Thomas told Josh that he was from California and that he had grown up in a Baptist Church and that he had already accepted Jesus Christ and that he was a Christian. Josh told Thomas that he was a Christian too. While they were still talking, someone came up and stepped on Josh’s foot. Josh cursed at the young man. Thomas was very surprised because Josh had just told him he was a Christian. Thomas is a well-spoken young man and he doesn’t care who he is around, he will always speak up for Christ and what Christians should try to do.

So, Thomas told Josh that being a Christian means that he shouldn’t curse. Thomas told Josh that using profanity means that you are ignorant and can’t speak without using profanity. Josh hadn’t thought about it that way, but he still wasn’t sure what it was that made Thomas say that he shouldn’t curse. Everyone cursed. Thomas asked Josh to look up James 3:9-12 and maybe that would help him want to watch the words that come out of his mouth.

Josh went home that night and looked up the scripture Thomas had asked him to read. After reading the scripture and praying about it and just sitting quietly for a while, Josh knew that he had two choices: he could just let things be and try not to curse anymore, or he could go back to the boy at school and apologize for cursing at him.

The next day at school, Josh was talking to Thomas at his locker when he saw the boy he had cursed at yesterday. Josh called to the boy and when he came over, Josh apologized to him for cursing at him yesterday. Thomas didn’t have to ask. He knew that his new friend had decided that it was not right for Christians to curse.

SCRIPTURE

With the tongue we praise the Lord and Father and with it we curse men who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers can a fig tree bear olives or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. James 3:9-12
