WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?

What’s Up With This Faith Thing?

Been told by an adult lately to “have faith”?  Does it sound like just a word that you haven’t been able to really understand yet?  I’m sure you know that faith is the heart of Christianity. However, at your age, it is probably very difficult to feel that your faith in Christ is really working.  Well, don’t despair some of us are only just getting to know faith for what it truly is.

So, what happens when you ask an adult about faith?  Do they point you toward Hebrews 11?   “Faith:  things hoped for and not yet seen.  You know this scripture by heart, but is it helping you?  Sometimes adults forget to begin teaching children at an early age to trust in Jesus and know that He will take care of you.  Well, now we are in times where Jesus is our safest bet.

The faith that you put in your parents, is the faith that you must learn to put in Christ.  Let’s think about some examples of faith.  Let’s look at math.  At a very early age, you were taught that 2 plus 2 equals 4. When you first learned that concept, you had to have faith that this was correct because you really had nothing else to go on.  Some one could have told you 2 plus 2 equals 5 and you would have believed that.  One more example:  Chanter means to sing in French.  You have to have faith that this is true until you ask a Frenchman or until you look it up in a French dictionary.

You are taught these things as children and you have to have faith that what you are taught is true.  Then one day your faith turns to knowledge and you just know that your nine times table is 1, 9, 18, 27, etc.  You know one day that fire is hot.

Sometimes, we aren’t taught early enough that we really need to have this type of knowledge when we trust in Christ.  But, it’s time we return to basics and teach one another early, that we must know that Christ will take care of us.

That’s really what is meant by Hebrews 11:1.  Faith is more than just knowing what the Bible says about who Christ is.  Faith is one day knowing who Christ is and what He can do for you.

Most adults today, grew slowly into their faith. As children and youth, they probably placed most of their faith in their parents and depended on them to provide for them and mainly to protect them.  However, with all the troubles of the world today, you have to begin knowing your faith to be truth now.

As youth, you have so much life ahead of you and you can’t enjoy all life has to offer if you are afraid to live.  So, start today, knowing Christ and knowing His promises are true.  Don’t guess any more.  Ask questions.  Pray to God.  Seek understanding now.  Know that Christ will keep you safe.  Have faith in Christ.

Don’t forget to email your comments, questions and concerns.  We want to hear from you!!

TEEN TALK

My brother, sister and I participated in the Holiday Fast on December 4-5.  We did a juice fast.  We drank juice and water.  Each morning, we woke up and sang a song, said a scripture we knew and prayed.  In our prayers, we would ask God to help us get through the day.  My mom reminded us that if we got hungry during the day we should pray and ask God to help us.    She also told us that if we got too hungry and couldn't make it all day, we should eat some jello or soup or a piece of fruit.

The first day was really hard for all three of us.  And, by dinner time we were really hungry, but we still wanted to try again the next day.  The second day, my mom told us to try and make it until twelve and then we could eat soup and jello.  So, 8:00 Wednesday night until 12:00 Thursday afternoon, we didn't eat anything.  The third day we did the same thing.

To be honest, I still don't really understand fasting and what it is supposed to do.  My mom said it is a time to clean out our bodies and souls and prepare ourselves to receive God's will for us.  She said that when we are hungry during the fast, praying to God would help the hunger go away, or at least not feel so strong.

Fasting is supposed to be a kind of sacrifice.  We sacrificed food for three days.  My mom said she was proud of us for trying to do the fast for three days.  She said that giving up something that is easy is not really a sacrifice.  So giving up bubble gum wouldn't really be a sacrifice.  But giving up food and feeling hungry and turning to God to help us through is a sacrifice.

Although my mom wanted us to do the fast with her, she says that fasting is a personal sacrifice and that we would most likely come to understand it when we get older and our relationship with God grows stronger.

I know that right now, we did this only because my mom asked us to, but she really believes that some day we'll do it because we want to.  I pray that she is right, because right now we just don't understand fasting.  I mean we understand the way it is explained, but we just don't feel what my mom and others feel.  So, we've been learning about faith and that what's  have to do we'll just have to have faith that one day we'll fast because we want to and when the fasting time is over, we will feel the closeness to God that my mother's tells us about.

What do you think about fasting?
