WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?"

Peer Pressure

Many students face peer pressure from other students. Some students get pressured into drinking or smoking by friends who say it is okay because it won't kill them, but too many American youth have been killed by drinking and driving, or by smoking at a beginning point in their lives. Every once in awhile youth feel like they are forced to do something out of their own free will. For example, you're invited to a party and you had to get permission from your parents. Unfortunately, your parents say no and you have to stay home. The next day you go to school and of course your friends are disappointed because you can't go. Then all of a sudden they start being very forceful towards you and one friend friends says just skip next time, then that's when the pressure starts up "If I don't see you at my next party, we are no longer friends". You then get invited to another party and you disobey your parents because they said no and it was a school night, you sneak out and head up to the party. The embarrassment and humiliation comes when you are at the party and having a good time when all of a sudden your parents come up there and grab you by the ear and snatch you right out of that party and start yelling at you for disobeying them, then your grounded. As a Christian, I am learning that we have to use Jesus's power to fight peer pressure. The solution is to become a leader who encourages others to follow me to Christ. Friends usually pressure us to do wrong. Others must see that I am a Christian that they really want to follow. That way if there is any pressure, Christians are pressuring others to follow Christ.

Jesus Wins Over Pressure

A woman was brought before a throng of people because she had been caught in adultery.  In other words, she was caught with someone who was not her husband.  In Biblical times a women found guilty of this sin was stoned to death.

So the group brought her to the square whether they thought they would pressure Jesus into siding with them and agreeing that this woman should be stone.  The crowd even brought up the law of Moses as a means of trapping Jesus.

Anyone else may have given in to their taunts and boasting of knowing what the law said.   But, not Jesus.  Jesus wins over pressure, tricks and foolishness every time.  He will always teach us a lesson when we try to tell Him how things should be done.

In this case, Jesus says to the crowd:  "Let him who is without sin be the first to cast a stone at the women."  And, as we should all do when we know Jesus has set us straight, the crowd went away and dropped their stones because not one of them was without sin.

The next time you want to throw stones at one of your peers, remember God's suggestion and pull that stone back.

This story is taken from John 8:4-7.
